about

Hello! I’m Joe, a Minneapolis tattoo artist focusing in blackwork, expressive lines, and stipple/dot shading.

In previous lives I was a graphic designer, web developer, and agency project manager. I began reincarnating myself in 2025 when I started my tattoo apprenticeship, which I completed in early 2026. I currently work out of a private studio in Bloomington, MN.

My interests in tattooing include art nouveau styles, botanical, occult, and curios. I also enjoy nerd stuff (d&d, video games, anime, literary). Click here to read more about projects I’m interested in.

practices & policies

I work out of a shared studio in Bloomington, MN, about 10 minutes from the Mall of America. My space in the studio is in a solo room with a closing door for the option of privacy.

As we are a small, private studio, we do not take walk-ins. To book a tattoo or consult, please use my inquiry form or DM me on Instagram.

rates & payment

rates

I calculate my rates based on hours and effort, but do my best to give concrete estimates before work begins. Generally, my rates look like:

  • $25 deposit to hold your appointment (goes toward your total)
  • $120 minimum (first hour)
  • $100 per additional hour
  • $400 full day rate (5 hours or tap out – split it with a friend for +$20)
  • Consults are free
  • Touchups are free
  • No design fee

payment

Deposits are paid online via Square. For your appointment, I can accept cash, card, or Apple pay via Square. However, I do not carry change, so please bring exact amounts if you plan to pay in cash. I don’t have a preference for how you pay. Really!

Flash

For flash tattoos I designed, the pricing is based on size (using the time estimate model above). You can ask for small changes to flash; I’ll let you know if I can meet the request, and if it will cost extra.

Click here to see my flash designs and current pricing.

Customs

I recommend a free consult to discuss customs, but I can also work with a written description. I’ll try to give you my best estimate of cost when I receive your prompt, and we can confirm the cost when you come in and approve the design. Most customs run between $200 and $800 depending on the size and whether they require more than one session.

Designs you bring in

I will give you an estimate of cost and time when I see the design. Some designs can’t be tattooed, or require additional work; I may charge you for the additional work if needed. Examples of reasons I might need extra time to convert a design you bring in (or not be able to tattoo it at all) in include:

  • The design includes effects that I can’t tattoo
  • The design can’t easily be converted to black-only (I don’t tattoo full color)
  • The design was drawn by another tattoo or visual artist and you don’t have their permission to use the work
  • The design was made using AI
  • It’s simply too small to tattoo

location & accessibility

The studio is in an office building in Bloomington with a free, private parking lot. I will send you the address and directions when booking your appointment.

Please note that the studio is on the second floor and there is no elevator in the building. One short flight of stairs with a landing in the middle is required to access the studio, and the studio door is XX” wide. I am available to assist you up and down the stairs; please let me know when booking your appointment so I can be ready.

sustainability

For hygiene and safety purposes, tattooing is a practice that is associated with a high amount of single-use and plastic waste. That said, there have been many improvements in how we can make tattooing more sustainable and eco-friendly.

Whenever possible, I use compostable and biodegradable products (with a priority on compostable first, biodegradable second). This includes my gloves, other barriers (tray and chair covers, machine and bottle bags), ink/water cups, and bibs, as well as sourcing eco-friendly options for single-wrapped disposable items like razors (my razor handles are compostable!), sticks, and even skin markers.

While these items still end up in the regular waste for sanitation reasons, they are at least not made of plastic.

Many of my supplies come from Good Judy.

privacy & safety

As a queer person of Chinese descent, it’s important to me that my space is welcoming and safe for the LGBTQIA+ community and people of color.

I will have to see and make a copy of your ID for record keeping. IDs are required for proof of age only. Copies I make of your ID are not stored digitally. I photocopy the ID and store it in a physical location in the studio. These may be accessed by state health officials or the owner of the studio for reasons pertaining to health code and tattooing.

Explicitly, but not restrictively, my tattoo chair is a safe place for trans and gender non-conforming folks. I am eager to refer to you by the name and pronouns of your choice.

I always ask before taking photos of your tattoos. Any photos I take may be posted to my Instagram; you are COMPLETELY WELCOME to decline to consent to my taking a photo. I do not post photos that show the face of the client.

I am trauma informed both by training for professionals and by personal experience. Please let me know if you have special needs relating to trauma, and/or if the area you are being tattooed is an area that has experienced trauma. I will need to touch you in order to tattoo you. (for information specifically regarding scars, please see my FAQ)

You may disclose any of the above information either in writing in advance of the appointment, or in person during the appointment.

projects

In addition to working on designs clients bring in, I enjoy illustrating and tattooing custom, unique pieces. I’m also an elder millennial and grew up on musty paperback fantasies. So if you’ve been looking for the perfect person to do that Skandranon piece, I’m your guy. The bullet list of what I’m generally interested in looks like:

  • Nostalgic fantasy (Neverending Story, The Last Unicorn)
  • Retro video games (PS1 Final Fantasies, Chrono Trigger, LOZ, gen 1 Pokemon)
  • Whimsical fantasy creatures
  • Witchy ephemera
  • Flora & fauna
  • Fancy natural swirls (auspicious clouds, water, smoke, flame, stars)

frequently asked questions

What is your booking process?

You send in your request; after I review it I’ll let you know if I think I’m a good fit for your project. We’ll pick a day/time and I’ll send you an appointment confirmation. The appointment confirmation email will include the address and directions to the studio, as well as a link to pay a $25 deposit to secure your appointment.

Please note I require cancellations/reschedules to be made more than 48 hours before your appointment time for your deposit to be refunded.

How should I prepare on the day of the appointment?

If this is your first tattoo, I wrote a whole post about it for you here!

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that can be arranged or easily removed to reveal the area where you wish to be tattooed. Come well hydrated and bring a water bottle with you. Feel free to bring earbuds/headphones.

Do not come under the influence of any alcohol or other drugs. Please do not take Ibuprofen or any other NSAID pain killers as they can increase the amount you bleed during the tattoo process.

Please do not wear heavily scented body sprays, deodorants, perfumes, etc.

I’ll send you home with aftercare instructions, a wrap, and a ketchup-packet-sized ointment, but you might want to pick up some Aquaphor/A&D/your ointment of choice to have ready. Feel free to ask about this when I see you.

Can I bring a guest?

You’re welcome to bring a guest. However, seating is limited, so please don’t bring more than one person. Also, please don’t bring children under the age of 18.

Should I tip?

Tips are appreciated but never expected. Average tipping is between 15-25% of the final tattoo fee. You’re able to add a tip after paying with a card.

Will you tattoo designs I bring in?

I’m happy to consider tattooing designs that you bring in, though I reserve the right to decline any work for any reason. I will let you know in advance if I foresee any issues with the design converting to a tattoo and we can discuss it to make sure it will work the way you’re envisioning it.

I will not tattoo designs by other tattoo artists or visual artists unless you have their explicit consent.

Will you customize a flash design for me?

I am open to customizing my own flash designs for you. Let me know what you’re thinking and I’ll let you know I can do it.

Where do your designs come from?

I am a human illustrator and I do not use AI when creating designs, either pre-designed or custom designs for clients. I do a lot of hand lettering as well, though I also use (properly licensed) fonts for some typographic/lettering tattoos.

Do you do touchups?

I do free touchups on my own work. Please use the regular inquiry form or message/email me on the chain of the original work and we’ll find a time/date.

Please allow at least 4 weeks for healing before scheduling a touchup!
